A SHORT TOUR OF God’s own country – the backwaters, wildlife and lush countryside of Kerala. Kochi, where the tour begins, is a cluster of islands, one of the finest natural harbours on the world. It used to be the major centre of trade with the British, Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese and Dutch. Even today it remains the main trading centre for spices and seafood. Though it is Kerala’s most cosmopolitan city, the high-rise buildings and malls have not yet to overpower the unique attraction of its ancient mix of cultures which is still very much apparent.
Kumarakom slumbers on the banks of the famous Vembanad Lake with its numerous canals, steams and distributaries that weave an intricate and enchantingly beautiful web. Its undisturbed tranquillity makes it a favourite with vast number of migratory birds who are also attracted by the abundance of fish to be had. Vantage points all along the shore provide excellent bird-watching opportunities which makes Kumarakom a popular destination for enthusiasts.
The Periyar Tiger Reserve around the man made Periyar Lake is one of the sanctuaries that fall under Project Tiger. The extensive deciduous and evergreen forests as well as the grasslands that it includes support a range of wildlife. The elephant population, in particular, has done well and is one of the biggest attractions.
DAY 01: ARRIVAL THIRUVANATHAPURAM
Reception and welcome at Kochi airport followed by transfer to your hotel.
DAY 02: KOCHI
After a leisurely morning proceed on a guided sightseeing tour of the city.
DAY 03: KOCHI / KUMARAKOM BY SURFACE
Drive up to Alleppey from where you go on a private cruise to Kumarakom.
DAY 04: KUMARAKOM / PERIYAR BY SURFACE
In the morning after breakfast, drive to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary for a guided day trek into the wilderness.
DAY 05: PERIYAR
Boat cruise on the Periyar lake to watch wildlife on the banks.
DAY 06: PERIYAR / KOCHI BY SURFACE
Take a leisurely drive back to Kochi, relax or go shopping.
DAY 07: DEPARTURE KOCHI
Transfer to the airport in time for your flight out.
