LADAKH, AN extension of the Gobi Desert and Tibetan plateau, comprises some of the world’s highest and harshest terrain. Large stretches of stark high-altitude deserts and ‘moonscapes’ makes this a forbidding landscape of view even from within the safe embrace of an aircraft – but there is also a strange beauty, an attraction that is almost addictive. At an altitude of 14,000ft, it is essential that you acclimatise yourself, it the rarefied air is not to overwhelm you. Accommodation is simple, even basic, but comfortable.
Driving out of the capital Leh, you are faces with the everchanging palate of the mountains…… …unbelievable hues of purple and red that stand out in sharp contrast to snow-capped peaks. Scrub and rough tenacious ground cover do little to clothe the starkness. The land seems empty, until a faint tinkle of bells heralds the arrival of pashm goats, whose coat veilds the famous pashmina, followed by the nomadic herdsmen with their yak and sheep. The predominantly Buddhist region has Gompas (monasteries) clinging to mountaintops in what seen the most precarious locations.
DAY 01: ARRIVAL DELHI
Reception and welcome at Delhi airport followed by transfer to your hotel.
DAY 02: DELHI
A day to visit the many sites that together make up the capital city if India.
DAY 03: DELHI / LEH BY FLIGHT
Fly to Leh in the morning. A day to acclimatise to the change in altitude is essential.
DAY 04: LEH
Visit the Leh city and surrounding monasteries of Hemis, Thikse, Shey and the Stok palace.
DAY 05: LEH
Day free to explore Leh on your own and free for independent activities.
DAY 06: LEHI / ALCHI / ULETOPKO BY SURFACE
Drive to Alchi to visit the monastery situated on the banks of River Indus. After which you carry on to Uletopko to camp overnight.
DAY 07: ULETOPKO / LAMAYURU / LEH BY SURFACE
After breakfast at camp leave for Lamayuru to visit one of the most picturesque monasteries in Ladakh. Drive back to Leh after lunch.
DAY 08: LEH
Full day excursion to Khardungla Pass at 5,260m the highest motorable pass in the world.
DAY 09: LEH / DELHI BY FLIGHT
Take the morning flight to Delhi. The day yours to explore or shop.
DAY 10: DEPARTURE DELHI
Transfer to the airport in time for your flight out.
